What Do Clients Want? Things Creative Directors and Producers Should Know

As a creative director/producer, you’ve obviously worked with a range of talents and also, all kinds of clients. However, despite all the expertise, there are a few creative directors/producers who seem to have a hard time figuring out their clients.

If you happen to be one such creative director/producer, maybe these tips could come in handy.

Stick with the Client’s Requests

When it comes to carrying out artistic direction, always listen to what the client wants even if you disagree with it. Of course, no one is saying you shouldn’t offer your two cents, but, if the client insists, stick to the plan.

At the same, time make sure you have variations of the same audition recorded and ready. Chances are, the client might just see the error of their ways and come to you for suggestions. Since you already have a few variations ready, you can save time and get straight to business.

Become the Go-To Director/Producer

The best way to lay the foundations for your career is to become the go-to creative director/producer. After all, nothing beats a loyal client. However, there’s a lot that is involved in establishing yourself as the go-to option.

For starters, you need to be a great creative director/producer to work with. That means you need to be flexible, accommodating, responsive, and positive. You probably already know that things can happen at the last minute in this job; from changes in the script to updated direction. You need to be able to show that you can adapt to such changes.

Finally, be consistent in your delivery. Establish your signature and don’t offer to do what you cannot. Always be realistic.

Stick to the Script

If you’re trying to grab a client, make sure you know how to impress them. Do they want to see how you work? Well, sending them a demo would be nice, but, you know what’s even better? Sending a custom production.

This provides the client with an exact idea of what you can do for them and that can go a long way in influencing their decisions in your favor.

Other than that, makes sure your demo productions are impeccable; with issues in audio/voiceover. Also, don’t waste time with introductions. Get straight to the points. Your client doesn’t want to waste time.
