It doesn’t matter how talented a voiceover artist is; direction is something that all voiceover artists need. In the case of GoAnimate videos, direction requires a tiny bit more importance and as a creative director, you need to make sure you’re doing the right thing.
Here are a few tips to help you out.
Get to Know Your Role
Make sure you understand your duties as a GoAnimate director. Make sure you know the kind of flow or tone you need from the voiceover artist. Take time to understand the script from the perspective of the character, the beats in various scenes, and the scenes themselves.
Once you do that, the next step is to move into the role in a constructive and efficient manner. Make sure your voice artist is worked to point where the script’s meaning is still fresh and relevant. The objective is to breathe life into the script; not kill it by overdoing things.
Prepare for Recording
The first thing to do is outline the voice profile that you will be using. For this, you will need to consider various aspects such as the audience, the goal of the video, the payment for the talent, and whether you can actually convey the voiceover style you want.
Knowing the audience is important because you can’t be using a Morgan Freeman- like narration for children. The narration has to be relatable.
As for goals, GoAnimate videos are generally business oriented. However, you still need to consider how the final business goal is achieved. For instance, what kind of emotions do you want to evoke in the audience?
Payment is something we don’t have to tell you about. The point is to find an effective and ideal talent who’ll work within your budget.
The last aspect is important. You need to be able to communicate exactly what you want. Don’t just say “try to sound like this or sound like that”. Be specific and find content that matches your requirements so that the voice talent understands what you need.
During Recording
There are a few things you need to make sure of when recording. For starters, make sure the talent is comfortable. Don’t be harsh or try to micro-manage. Instead, focus on creating an environment where criticism is constructive and not judgmental.
Make sure everything you need is communicated in advance. Don’t be the backseat driver who gives directions seconds too late.
Once you’re done recording, seek feedback and make changes if necessary.
