Video Advertising and Voiceover: Looking to the Future

Roberta Kennedy discusses the future of voiceover and how video and voiceover need to work in perfect sync.

In the last few years, digital and video marketing have grown in leaps and bounds. According to an article published by Business Insider, online ad revenues are expected to touch $5 billion this year. It’s a fair estimate, considering that revenues had already reached $2.8 billion just two years ago.

Another report from emarketer.com tells us that the expenditure for digital video advertisements has touched over $9 billion and all this happened at the start of 2016.

Other estimations and predictions revolve around how mobile video will soon overtake desktop video and how desktop video will still remain significant despite this. Of course, not everything desktop related will enjoy the same fortune.

A survey conducted by Cowen and Company suggests that video growth will surely cross that of social, with the growth trailing off at the end of the next decade.

What does it mean for the voiceover industry?

The projections on video and digital marketing can only mean one thing for the voiceover industry – more jobs. Whether you’re a voiceover talent or a creative director/producer, you’re going to be needed more in the days to come.

However, people in the voiceover industry need to get a few things straight in order to make the most of this bubble. For instance, clients want voiceover artists who can work for them long term with regard to brand representation. So, it would be wise for both, voiceover artists and creative producers/directors, to research a little about the brand they are working for.

Also, video ads are known to have the highest click through rate (1.84% on an average) among all digital formats. In other words, your voiceovers must play a key role in holding the audience’s attention, which, these days, is quite the challenge.

On the other hand, 68% of mobile videos are un-skippable according to the Mobile Marketing Association. As a result, mobile views are far more beneficial and click rates are much higher with them. Also, many studies have shown that viewers spend a fair bit of time looking at videos. So, if creative directors/producers can create and incorporate quality content into the first few seconds of the video, brands can benefit from higher viewership and retention rates.

The point

The point here is that digital video and traditional video ads aren’t going anywhere. They are here to stay and their popularity is only going to grow. Now is the right time for voiceover industry professionals to make hay. Voiceover professionals on both sides of the studio must start focusing on quality and professionalism, while making the most of the current market.
