Recording an E-Learning Script: Tips

Even though it has been around for over a decade, E-Learning is something that most creative directors, producers, and even, voiceover artists, have rarely heard of. E-Learning is an entire industry by itself and it is a magnet for voiceover jobs.

Though the earnings aren’t significant, it can be a good way to make a little extra money.

E-Learning explained

You’re probably wondering what e-learning is all about. Well, it basically is a technical term used to describe online education. Plenty of students, who do not have the time or ability to access traditional education, opt for e-learning.

Apart from catering to students, e-learning programs or courses are designed to even train and educate employees in an organization.

There are a wide range of tools used to disseminate information and course material via the e-learning platform. These typically include e-books, PDFs, PowerPoint presentations, instructional videos and interactive software etc.

The point here is that there is a need for voiceover recordings in this industry. For instance, an interactive video may need someone to narrate the content in a professional manner.

So, if you’re interested in taking up an e-learning project, here are a few tips to help you out with the voiceover recording process.

Getting started

Since, this is a niche field, trying out your usual approach may cause you to fail. It is better to focus on creating a solid learning experience for the listeners (students).

The first thing to do is to focus on the script. Make sure it is formatted well and easy to read for the voiceover artist. Make sure you include page breaks in the script to help the voiceover artist differentiate between different paragraphs and sentences.

Ask your voiceover artist to make a note of the page breaks so that they can remain prepared.

Make sure there are acronym or pronunciation guides available to the voiceover artist. If there are words or phrases that need more emphasis, highlight them to alert the voiceover talent.

The key thing to remember here is that e-learning content producers are looking for someone who can narrate the content in an exciting and attractive way. So, when auditioning voiceover talent, focus on these aspects.

Try to understand the viewer’s requirements. Imagine what you would expect from an e-learning script if you were a student or trainee. Considering that e-learning material is usually dry, it would be nice if you could make the recording sound as emphatic as possible, without compromising the main objective – education.
