Tips to Create an App Preview Video

As a new or existing business, you’ve probably realized the value of having an app for your brand. It’s pretty much a necessity these days. But, there’s something just as important as creating the app itself – it’s called marketing the app.

Now, thanks to Apple’s new video app previews, you have an opportunity to creatively present your app to the market. With the right video preview, you have the chance to make some real impact and stand out in a sea of over a million apps.

So, what’s needed to create the perfect app video? Well, here are a few tips that should make things easier.

Get your machine ready

You obviously need to show how your app works and functions in real time and that means you’ll need a mobile device in place. This would ideally include an iPad or iPhone running on iOS8. If you’re using a Mac, then you will need the OS X Yosemite.

Of course, the Yosemite isn’t available to the public, so, you will have to make do with the Beta version. If that turns out to be a problem, use a device simulator that runs Xcode.

Get the right software for screen captures

You will need software that’s good at screen captures. In this case, SimCap would be a good choice. SimCap is known to deliver consistently good results and it supports both, portrait and landscape orientations. But, when choosing the orientation, make sure you stick to just one. Avoid switching.

Of course, you don’t have to rely on SimCap exclusively. There are several other options as well. A simple search on Google should deliver options.

Speaking of captures, do check your capture settings as well. Ideally, you will need to have your capture speed set to 30 fps and scale to 100%. The quality must be lossless. Switch on the toggle option for Show Multi-Touch and Show Taps. This will help you offer better clarity and instruction.

Prepare a script

No good video was ever made without a script and that applies to app preview videos too. So, make sure you have a script to refer to. A script will help you time your visual, voiceover, music and text etc.

Use a professional voiceover

Finally, never make the mistake of recording your own voice for the narration. Always keep things professional and go for the experts. Having the right voice and tone matters a lot, when it comes to videos. Without the right, you are likely to lose your chance at capturing the audience’s attention, who will simply switch to another app option.
