Are you a creative director/producer looking to connect with a voiceover talent that’s located several miles away? Well, that would have been next to impossible some time ago, but, today, technology makes most things possible.
Industry people refer to this as “Remote Live Direction”. To put it simply, you can now, as a creative director/producer, direct live projects by connecting with a voiceover’s home studio. It doesn’t matter where you live because you can be present anywhere and at any time you choose to. There are no more geographical barriers.
Apart from making it easier to connect, remote live direction also makes it easier for the voice talent to understand all your requirements, since you’re relying on their studio to get the job done. As a result, you’ll have to deal with very few takes.
So, how can this be done? Well, here are a few systems through which you can execute remote live direction.
ISDN
ISDN or Integrated Services Digital Network is a type of special phone line offered by some telecom firms. What it does it connects one studio with another, creating the impression of a single recording environment. Also, ISDN is very effective for high quality recording.
In other words, your studio in LA can now connect with another studio in Australia. You can easily communicate with the voiceover talent, while enjoying access to recording session. The recording sessions are simultaneously accessible to the talent as well.
However, ISDN services are limited and you require a codec for it to work. Also, it is an outdated piece of tech that’s slowly being phased out.
Phone Patch
A phone patch comes in handy if you want to direct a session, but, aren’t too concerned about collecting the file right away. Once you’re done with directing in real time, the final recording can be sent later. There are plenty of phone patch options out there and it’s a wise idea to find out which one your voice talent is using.
For example, Skype is one of the most popular options. This is because it relies on HD VoIP technology, which helps it achieve the same recording quality as ISDN. You can record audio at 100 Hz to 6 KHz.
Source Connect
Source Connect is an audio over IP software that functions exactly like ISDN. However, it is a much more affordable option and that has earned the application a loyal fanbase. There are many voiceover artists that have Source Connect installed as part of their home studio.
Of course, the application needs an internet connection to run, which, these days, should not be a problem. The application connects two digital studios in real time making it easier for you to direct and collect the recording right away.
Source Connect also works with ISDN. All you need to do is develop a bridge between the 2 studios and let your ISDN system record the session. Most voiceover artists know how to get this done.
