Save Recording Time with Session Templates and Presets

Recording sessions take a lot of time, but are you one of those producers/directors who end up taking too much time? Well, if you are, do know that there are better ways to make use of your time in the studio.

Imagine a scenario where you could finish up the recording process quicker and audition voiceover of artists faster? Wouldn’t that be great? More time could lead to more opportunities. Fortunately, this isn’t a fantasy anymore, thanks to the power of technology. Modern recording software comes with features that allow you to do exactly that.
Here are a few helpful tips.

Use Templates and Presets

As they say, knowledge is power. That applies to recording software as well.

Once you get a clearer picture about the various aspects of audio recording, you can create session templates by replicating certain settings. This will allow you to cut down on the time spent, significantly. Additionally, it also makes the voiceover artist’s job easier as they can get on with the auditioning/recording process.

Having session templates and presets prevents you from starting all over again. Plus, there is the bonus of having consistency in each audition and recording.

Presets allow you to set the EQ in advance and keep it fixed. For instance, you can establish a particular level of compression or reduce sibilance. De-essing can eliminate the Ss at the beginning of some words and even at the end of certain pluralized words.

Of course, presets vary from program to program and they also depend on the plugins you install. Some of the most commonly recording software include Logic Pro, Pro tools, Audacity, Adobe Audition and Garageband etc. Logic Pro, Adobe Audition, and Pro Tools have good preset options.

Expectations are Easier to Achieve Now!

As a director/producer, you obviously expect depth and clarity in your recordings. This means that you will need a space that boasts of good acoustics. A sensible Compression and EQ can help you achieve this. They can boost the voice quality without making the usage of effects seem obvious.

The key is to keep things minimal. Avoid too much doctoring. You wouldn’t want a recording that gives away the effects. The point of using presets is to make the voice sound as good as possible. Overworked recordings indicate that you’ve crossed the limits.

Keep it basic. Also, remember to save templates or presets of varying styles. What you use for one type of recording may not be applicable to another.
