Voice Editing Oversights to Watch Out For

As a video creator or producer, pristine and clear audio is obviously one of your top priorities. This is especially important in the context of voiceovers. However, if you’re one of those content creators who beg to differ, you can be rest assured that even if you don’t care for good audio, your audience definitely does.

That’s why paying attention to the audio editing process is extremely important. The next time you work on a voiceover recording, or for that matter, any audio recording, do make sure you pay attention to every detail and fix your audio before producing the final cut.

Speaking of audio editing, here are a few common errors that most audio editors and producers end up ignoring. Watch out for these mistakes and apply the necessary solutions to fix them.

External noise

When recording a voiceover artist, you’re bound to come across some external noise. For instance, some of the most common sources of external noise are pages and pencils. Yup! Your recording equipment can pick up the sound of pencils roiling and pages turning, which is a common feature in any recording studio.

The obvious reason for this is the use of paper based scripts.

A good solution would be to go digital. Try using a tablet or even a mobile phone with a large sized screen. Using a digital device will eliminate the noise that comes from turning pages. Going digital will also prevent you from using pencils. Most smart devices come with markup features in case you need any. Of course, there are always apps to rely on as well.

False starts and sentence fragments

When reading a script, some voiceover artists will make the mistake of reading something more than once or make a reading mistake of some kind in general. This will usually force them to restart the narration all over again. Basically, you’re going to see some starting and stopping going on.

If you’re not careful, you could end up ignoring this while editing.

So, what’s the solution?

Well, the only solution is to actually spend time listening to the entire recording and paying 100% attention. That’s the only way you’ll catch these start/stop issues.

You could also ask your voiceover artist to indicate to you these start/stop moments each time they happen. For instance, some voiceover artists will clap their hands to create a spike in the recording. This spike can serve as an indicator.
