Working with a voice-over talent can be hard. There are bound to be situations where the producer or the director just can’t get through to the voice-over artist and vice-versa. Though, these things are bound to happen, creative directors and producers can minimize such problems by following a few simple guidelines.
These guidelines are universal and they are relevant to all scenarios. It doesn’t matter whether you work with a voice-over artist over long distance or in a studio. Following these basic tips from your end can significantly reduce the chaos and confusion that crop up during a recording session.
Keep the script simple
Very often, badly prepared scripts lead to poor recording sessions and extended delays. So, make sure your script is clear and simple to read. This will make the talent’s job easier and also, yours. The script is the main tool that the talent will be using, so it needs to be as error free as possible. Make it a point to mark out very clearly what parts you want recorded and the ones you don’t. If your script isn’t clear, then there are going to be multiple recordings and some voice-over talents will charge you more for that. So, get someone who can proof-read scripts. It’ll save you time, money, and effort.
Choose the perfect voice-over talent
This is kind of obvious. Every recorder wants the perfect voice for the job. But, a lot of creative directors and producers end up choosing talents based on what they read in the resume, only to find out that the talent does not suit their project. So, ask your talent for a recorded sample. This will help you make an informed decision. Don’t just rely on their written word.
Be specific
Don’t use complex and subjective jargon to describe your expectations. Be as objective as possible. If you want a certain word pronounced in a certain way, let the talent know. If you want a 20 second voice-over, don’t give the talent a 50 second script. Whatever your expectations are, make sure they are communicated to the talent as specifically as possible.
